Cordyceps Mushroom: Benefits, Energy & What You Need to Know

Cordyceps has become one of the most popular functional mushrooms in the world of energy, fitness and everyday wellness.

Unlike caffeine and other traditional stimulants, Cordyceps has attracted attention for a very different reason: researchers have been investigating its potential relationship with exercise capacity, endurance and energy metabolism.

But what exactly is Cordyceps? Does it actually improve energy? And what does the science say about using Cordyceps supplements?

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps refers to a group of fungi with a long history of traditional use in Asia.

Two names you'll commonly encounter are Ophiocordyceps sinensis—historically known as Cordyceps sinensis—and Cordyceps militaris.

Today, Cordyceps is widely available in functional mushroom supplements, including powders, capsules, extracts and gummies.

Researchers have studied a number of naturally occurring compounds associated with Cordyceps, including cordycepin, particularly in relation to biological processes connected with energy metabolism and exercise. However, laboratory findings don't automatically translate into noticeable benefits in humans, which is why human clinical research matters.

What Are the Potential Benefits of Cordyceps?

Cordyceps is particularly associated with energy, exercise performance and endurance.

Recent reviews of human research have found encouraging results in some studies, but the evidence isn't completely consistent.

A 2026 review identified five intervention studies involving 321 participants examining Cordyceps militaris and exercise-related outcomes. Some reported improvements in selected measures of performance or recovery, while others did not. The authors concluded that better-controlled trials using standardized Cordyceps preparations are still needed.

So, just like Lion’s Mane, it's better to think of Cordyceps as a functional mushroom with interesting emerging research, rather than a guaranteed performance enhancer.

1. Energy and Exercise Performance

One of the biggest reasons people are interested in Cordyceps is its potential relationship with physical performance.

A 2017 randomized, double-blind study investigated a mushroom blend containing Cordyceps militaris in 28 young adults.

After one week, researchers didn't observe significant treatment effects across several primary exercise measures. However, among participants who continued supplementation for three weeks, improvements were reported in some measures, including maximal oxygen consumption and time to exhaustion. Importantly, this study used a mushroom blend rather than isolated Cordyceps, which makes it difficult to attribute the findings entirely to Cordyceps itself.

A more recent review of the human literature similarly concluded that Cordyceps shows potential as an exercise aid, particularly with longer supplementation periods, but that its effects on aerobic fitness remain inconsistent.

2. Endurance

Cordyceps is also frequently marketed toward people interested in endurance.

There is some scientific support for investigating that relationship.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of fungal supplementation in athletes reported improvements associated with Cordyceps sinensis supplementation in measures including endurance performance, ventilatory threshold and peak oxygen uptake.

However, not every clinical trial has produced positive results.

For example, a placebo-controlled study involving 22 endurance-trained male cyclists found that five weeks of a Cordyceps sinensis preparation did not improve aerobic capacity, ventilatory threshold or endurance performance.

That's an important reminder that research into Cordyceps isn't one-sided.

3. Oxygen Utilization and Exercise Capacity

Researchers have also investigated whether Cordyceps supplementation might influence the way the body responds to exercise.

In a small placebo-controlled study involving healthy adults aged 50–75, 12 weeks of a Cordyceps sinensis preparation was associated with improvements in metabolic and ventilatory thresholds. However, researchers found no improvement in maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂ max).

Taken alongside other studies, this suggests there may be something worth investigating—but we still don't have enough evidence to say that Cordyceps reliably improves exercise capacity for everyone.

Is Cordyceps the Same as Caffeine?

No.

And this is probably one of the most important things to understand about Cordyceps.

Cordyceps is not caffeine, and it shouldn't be expected to feel like caffeine.

Caffeine is a stimulant. Its effects can often be noticed relatively quickly after consumption.

Cordyceps is a functional mushroom and is being researched through entirely different biological pathways.

So if someone takes a Cordyceps supplement expecting the same immediate sensation as drinking a strong coffee or energy drink, they're comparing two very different things.

That distinction is also why Cordyceps has become interesting to people looking beyond conventional caffeinated products.

Does Cordyceps Give You Energy Immediately?

Not necessarily.

Research has examined both shorter and longer periods of Cordyceps supplementation, and results vary considerably between studies.

A recent review found supplementation periods ranging from one to 16 weeks, with different Cordyceps preparations, dosages and exercise protocols being used.

That makes it difficult to establish a universal timeline for when somebody should expect to notice an effect.

It's therefore better to view Cordyceps as something that can be incorporated consistently into a routine rather than promising an immediate energy surge.

Cordyceps vs Caffeine: What's the Difference?

This is where the two are particularly different.

Caffeine primarily works as a central nervous system stimulant. Cordyceps isn't simply a caffeine substitute operating through the same mechanism.

That means describing Cordyceps as “natural caffeine” would be misleading.

Instead, Cordyceps is being investigated for its own potential relationship with exercise physiology and energy metabolism.

And importantly, Cordyceps itself does not naturally contain caffeine.

That distinction can make Cordyceps particularly interesting to people exploring functional ingredients outside conventional stimulant-based products.

Who Might Be Interested in Cordyceps?

Cordyceps has become especially popular among athletes, active adults and people interested in functional mushroom supplements.

But you don't have to be an endurance athlete to be interested in it.

Someone researching alternatives to conventional energy supplements may encounter Cordyceps simply because of the growing scientific and consumer interest surrounding the mushroom.

The important thing is maintaining realistic expectations.

Current evidence doesn't establish Cordyceps as a guaranteed way to increase energy, endurance or athletic performance.

What Should You Look for in a Cordyceps Supplement?

As with any functional mushroom supplement, look beyond the claims printed on the front of the package.

Check the Supplement Facts panel, serving size, Cordyceps source, formulation and additional ingredients.

This becomes especially important when interpreting research because Cordyceps studies don't all use the same species, extracts, doses or formulations. Recent researchers have specifically identified the lack of standardized preparations as one limitation of the existing evidence.
