Some mushroom-derived preparations have even been studied in medical settings, but that is very different from claiming that an ordinary dietary supplement can prevent or treat disease.

6. Maitake

Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is an edible mushroom traditionally valued as both food and a functional ingredient.

Like several other mushrooms in this list, Maitake contains naturally occurring polysaccharides, including beta-glucans.

Its compounds have been investigated for several potential biological effects, but much of the research remains laboratory or animal based rather than definitive evidence of benefits from everyday supplementation in healthy humans.

9. Royal Sun Agaricus

Royal Sun Agaricus (Agaricus blazei / Agaricus subrufescens) is another mushroom used in functional mushroom formulations.

Researchers have investigated preparations derived from Agaricus mushrooms, particularly their polysaccharides and potential immunological activity.

As with many mushrooms in this category, however, laboratory findings and small clinical studies shouldn't be interpreted as proof that an everyday supplement can treat or prevent disease.

And finally, one of the most familiar mushrooms of all.

White button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) are widely consumed as food around the world.

Their inclusion demonstrates the overlap between nutrition and functional mushroom supplementation. Mushrooms aren't simply sources of isolated “active ingredients”—they're complex foods containing proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and numerous other compounds.

Are More Mushrooms Always Better?

Not necessarily.

Seeing “10 mushrooms” on a supplement label might sound automatically superior to seeing three or five, but the number alone doesn't tell you whether a product is good.
